Equipment that is <strong>ITTF Approved,<\/strong>\u00a0meets these strict requirements and is therefore legal for use in formal table tennis competition and tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-81\" src=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/ittf-150x150.gif\" alt=\"ITTF Approved equipment\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>What equipment needs ITTF approval?<\/h2>\n<p>Table tennis equipment must meet certain quality and performance requirements to receive <strong>ITTF approval<\/strong> status. The requirements are set out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/table-tennis-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules and regulation of table <strong>tennis<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and further detailed in the ITTF &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ittf.com\/equipment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technical Leaflets<\/a>&#8216;. Only equipment that is ITTF approved is legal for use in formal competitions. Manufacturers pay fees to the ITTF to apply for approval, and only if the equipment continues to meet the requirements, and the manufacturer continues to pay the fees, will the equipment remain ITTF approved.<\/p>\n<p>Only the following equipment requires ITTF approval for it to be used in official table tennis competition and tournaments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Balls<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Floors<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Net assembly<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tables<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rubbers (Racket Coverings)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-361\" src=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_rubber-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"ittf approved table tennis rubber\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_rubber-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_rubber-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_rubber-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_rubber.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Table Tennis Rubbers<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ll discuss the topic of <a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ITTF Approved table tennis rubbers<\/strong><\/a> first, as this is applicable to most players. For rubbers, a.k.a. &#8216;<strong>Racket Coverings&#8217;<\/strong>, to receive ITTF approval status, they must meet strict requirements of quality, physical properties and performance, as set out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/d3mjm6zw6cr45s.cloudfront.net\/2017\/10\/T4_Racket_Coverings_BOD2017.pdf_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITTF Technical Leaflet T4<\/a>. Once the ITTF approval has been granted, the rubbers are added to the\u00a0List of Authorized Racket Coverings (LARC), which is updated twice yearly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To check if your rubbers are ITTF approved, you must check two things:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Check that the ITTF logo is on the rubber (pictures right)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Check that the rubber is listed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ittf.com\/equipment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest LARC.<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note that ITTF approval does not automatically mean your rubber is legal. It must also meet the other legal requirements under the <a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/table-tennis-rules\/table-tennis-rules-ball-racket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">table tennis rules regarding rubbers<\/a>. In a nut shell, it must be good condition, unmodified and glued down flat covering no more than playing surface of the blade.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=30_62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-364\" src=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_ball-145x150.jpg\" alt=\"ITTF approved ball\" width=\"145\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_ball-145x150.jpg 145w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_ball-290x300.jpg 290w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_table_tennis_ball.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 145px) 100vw, 145px\" \/><\/a>Balls<\/h3>\n<p>Strict rules and regulations also apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=30_62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITTF approved balls<\/a>. The ball must meet all the requirements and set out in the <a href=\"https:\/\/d3mjm6zw6cr45s.cloudfront.net\/2017\/10\/T3_Ball_BoD2016_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T3 Technical leaflet<\/a>, and if approved the ball will be added to the\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;List of ITTF Approved Balls&#8221;, which is updated regularly. You can find the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/d3mjm6zw6cr45s.cloudfront.net\/2018\/02\/Balls_2018_04.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 list of ITTF approved balls here<\/a>. Not only does the ITTF approve the balls upon initial testing, but they buy balls regularly through standard retail methods, to ensure the balls continue to meet the standard. Only 3 star balls can be ITTF approved, and the ITTF logo must be displayed on the ball, see example pictured right.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-366\" src=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_net_assembly-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"ITTF approved table &amp; net\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_net_assembly-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_net_assembly-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ittf_approved_net_assembly.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Table, Net Assembly and Flooring<\/h3>\n<p>Similarly for table tennis tables and the net assembly, the ITTF provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ittf.com\/equipment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of those that are ITTF approved<\/a>. Since this is usually the club&#8217;s responsibility, not that of the players, I won&#8217;t go into further detail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What about table tennis blades?<\/h3>\n<p>Surprisingly, the ITTF does not approve blades, which means it can be pretty much of any shape or size, as long as it meets the <a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/table-tennis-rules\/table-tennis-rules-ball-racket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rules regarding table tennis rackets.<\/a>\u00a0These are the main ones that apply to the blade:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2.4.1 The racket may be of any size, shape or weight but the blade shall be flat and\u00a0rigid.<\/li>\n<li>2.4.2 At least 85% of the blade by thickness shall be of natural wood; an adhesive layer within the blade may be reinforced with fibrous material such as carbon\u00a0 fibre, glass fibre or compressed paper, but shall not be thicker than 7.5% of the total thickness or 0.35mm, whichever is the smaller.<\/li>\n<li>2.4.4 The covering material shall extend up to but not beyond the limits of the blade, except that the part nearest the handle and gripped by the fingers may be left uncovered or covered with any material.<\/li>\n<li>2.4.5 The blade, any layer within the blade and any layer of covering material or adhesive on a side used for striking the ball shall be continuous and of even<br \/>\nthickness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the blade can be any size, the playing surface must be covered by a legal racket covering(rubber) to be legal, which therefore limits the size of the blade to the largest sheet of legal rubbers available.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-375 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/competition_table_tennis-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Competition table tennis\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/competition_table_tennis-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/competition_table_tennis-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/competition_table_tennis-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/competition_table_tennis-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/competition_table_tennis.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Does the competition in my club require ITTF approved equipment?<\/h3>\n<p>Most clubs do not meet the requirements for ITTF approved flooring, as this is very expensive. However unless you&#8217;re a social club, most table tennis clubs do use only ITTF Approved balls, tables and net assembly, and require the players to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/tabletennisshop.com.au\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">table tennis bat<\/a> that&#8217;s legal under ITTF rules, and the rubbers must be ITTF approved. Of course it&#8217;s entirely up the club to decide how strictly they enforce these requirements. but for the more official competitions and tournaments usually the rules are applied and equipment is checked by umpires. It&#8217;s in the interest of the clubs to apply these rules, so that the players are prepared for National or International competitions, should they progress that far.<\/p>\n<p>If you play in the more casual or social competitions, it&#8217;s quite likely the rules are not even applied, which means you can play with pretty much anything.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How do I make sure I buy legal table tennis equipment?<\/h3>\n<p>Well if you buy equipment from a shop like OOAK, you can be sure the equipment is legal and ITTF approved (unless otherwise marked).
